The story of the photos seen in The Pull

My uncle Warren (Dr. Warren George Povey) was my father’s younger brother, who was born in 1927 and raised in Portland, Oregon. After an inspiring life as an obstetrician working to improve maternal health around the world (plus working as a folk singer, a playwright, and a mountain climber), Warren passed away in 2010.

A few years ago, my siblings and I undertook the task of clearing out the family home and we found a trunk of Warren’s possessions that he had left there for safekeeping. Among the many photos (including a incredible collection from his time working in Africa), I found a set of 35mm negatives, some of which are seen in this film. He had written “1961” on the envelope and the packet included a contract sheet, but no other notes.

The black and white shots taken in and around New York City include subway riders, skiers in Central Park, and commuters on the Staten Island Ferry. Warren was a medical resident at Bellevue at the time, and he appears in one of the photos (below).
