Ships In A Bottle

In the spring of 2001, San Francisco’s Cinematheque commissioned several installations and films for a public presentation called Sink or Swim. Conceived by artist Melinda Stone, Sink or Swim was an outdoor, ephemeral event that aimed to reveal the history and future of San Francisco’s Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and the first cinematic ship-in-a-bottle was commissioned for the event. Wrapped Around the Screw served as the starting point for a group of pieces that explore the idea of a ship-in-a-bottle as a physical construction with a small screen unfurled inside the bottle and ship’s expressed as projected light from a 16mm loop projector.
