statement
The films and installations that I have been making since the mid 1980's are intertwined with my interests in music and engineering. From the very beginnings of my exploration into experimental film, I have often described my filmmaking as something related to the romantic notion of the message-in-a-bottle. After having first learned the pragmatic skills of production filmmaking and narrative storytelling, I was awakened by the power of personal, non-narrative filmmaking and its history of idiosyncratic characters working alone to communicate some strange idea to a (usually) very small audience. I began to see these filmmakers as sun-addled eccentrics stuffing their ravings into empty rum bottles and throwing them into the sea. Given that a large portion of an experimental film viewing audience is usually filmmakers themselves, it's always seemed curious to me that the bottle/films float directly across the ocean to a remote island where another castaway/filmmaker howls with enjoyment at the discovery of a message from a kindred soul. This magical form of communication seems to have always bypassed the main-stream of humanity, who remain largely unaware of its existence. And tellingly, I've found my community among these foundlings.
